Guatemala is a beautiful country in Central America, with rich indigenous cultures and stunning natural habitats. It is believed that the Jesuits first introduced coffee to the country around 1740. However, coffee only became a relevant crop after 1856, when the invention of dyes reduced the demand for indigo, which used to be the main cash crop at the time.

Today, Guatemala is home to some 125,000 coffee producers who drive the coffee industry in eight different regions. This coffee was grown in the south by Finca La Pastoria located in the Santa Rosa department. Thanks to the high altitudes in the area as well as nutrient-rich soils from surrounding volcanoes, varieties such as Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Pache, Pacamara, and Catimor, thrive here.

Guatemala, like other Central American countries, uses altitude to grade its coffee. This lot is an HB (Hard Bean) – meaning it was grown between 1,200 – 1,300 masl. Harvest in the region goes from December until March. Once ripe coffee cherries are harvested, they are fully washed, and then dried on patios. The result is a balanced and clean cup.

Guatemala is a fascinating country with rich indigenous culture and stunning natural habitats. The most striking features of its landscape are the 37 volcanoes, several of them still being active. These volcanoes are not only attractive to travelers to discover but make up the distinct characters to be found in Guatemalan coffees.
