Located in the very middle of Central America, Honduras is known for its natural beauty. Endless forests with lone roads cutting through make you think of a tropical version of Scandinavia. The department of Copán is located in western Honduras, close to the border with Guatemala, and it is famous for its Mayan archeological sites – Copán was from the 5th to 9th centuries AD a powerful city ruling a vast kingdom within the southern Maya area.

In the south-east of Copán, you can find the small town of Corquín, where the cooperative of Proexo is located. Established in 2016 by 24 founder members, Proexo was born as an initiative to fight the challenges brought by climate change in coffee production, have better access to the coffee market, and build strong and stable partnerships. Today, the cooperative has over 240 members and has coverage in three departments: Copán, Ocotepeque and Lempira. Moreover, it supports farmers with technical assistance, best practices, crop diversification training, access to certifications, gender equity programs, and more.

Coffees from Proexo come from farms located at around 1,000 and 1,800 masl. Among the varieties in these farms are Ihcafe 90, Lempira, Caturra, Obata, Catuai, and Parainema. This particular coffee is washed and was produced by smallholder farmers in Copán, Ocotepeque and Lempira. It is Organic certified and classified as a HG EP. HG stands for “High Grown” and specifies that the coffee was grown at altitudes between 1,000 and 1,200 masl. EP stands for “European Preparation,” which refers to the screen size (15+) and the low defect tolerance of the lot. In the cup it is sweet and balanced, ideal for filter or espresso blends!

Located in the very middle of Central America, Honduras is a country that shows off its natural beauty. Mountainous landscapes covered with endless forests and jungles with abundant wildlife are characteristic of this beautiful country. Some people even refer to Honduras as the „green lung“ of Central America.

Although Honduras is producing more coffee than Costa Rica and Guatemala combined, little is known about it in the specialty scene. Over decades banana was the predominant cash crop in Honduras.

While neighboring countries had governmental initiatives to foster smallholder coffee growth, Honduran coffee production gained little recognition aside from the commodity market. Lack of infrastructure was the main reason why high-quality coffees could not be distinguished from other produce. However, in the past few years, the Honduran national coffee institute IHCAFE has put quite some effort into educating the farmers for them to be able to improve processing and growing techniques.

By creating a widespread network of producers and washing stations even in remote areas, the interest in high-quality coffee production grew. Nowadays, especially coffees from smallholder cooperatives have managed to make their way to cross the sea and spoil us with their divine sweetness.
