On the quest for distinguished coffee, you simply cannot pass Colombia. Colombia’s quality reputation stems from hard work and excellent terrain. A unique topographic characteristic also comes into play when talking about the different facets of Colombian coffees: the three cordilleras of the Andes mountain range. Several microclimates are formed between and within the mountain ranges.

Towards southern Colombia, the three cordilleras find their way back to becoming one mountain range, creating a knot. Shortly before this knot lies the city of Popayán, the capital of the department of Cauca, also known as „Ciudad Blanca“ - the white city - due to its colonial architecture with plenty of white buildings in the city center. To the east, the Popayán plateau borders Huila. Due to the altitude and the proximity to the equator and the surrounding mountains, the so-called Meseta de Popayán provides a very stable climate year and rich volcanic soils - and therefore an attractive environment for growing coffee.

Coffees from the Popayán area are mostly grown on smallholder farms ranging from 5 to 10 ha. Their coffee is brought to washing stations where the small lots are added to become larger ones. This coffee was produced by small and mid-sized farmers in the region. It is a special L+B selection named " Los Anturios" and holds a sweet and bold cup with strong notes of dark berries.

Historically, Colombia has been shattered by various periods of violence and setbacks. However, in the past 20 years, Colombia has leaped to becoming an economic powerhouse in Latin America. On the quest for distinguished coffees, you simply cannot miss Colombia. Its quality reputation stems from hard work and excellent terrain.

Colombia's natural beauty stems from its extreme diversity: two oceans, snow-peaked mountains and glaciers, endless deserts as well as the Amazon basin are found in this unique South American gem. The west of the country is dominated by three Andes mountain ranges, called the Cordilleras.

Due to their proximity to the equator, several microclimates are formed within these mountain ranges. Add to that altitude ranges from 800 to 2,200 meters, and you will start to realize why Colombian coffees are so diverse.
