Guatemala is a fascinating country with stunning natural landscapes. Thirty-seven volcanoes, some of them still active, are spread across the country. They are not only iconic features but also play a key role in shaping the distinct character of Guatemalan coffees. Since the end of the Guatemalan civil war in the late 20th century, sustainable agriculture and high-quality coffee cultivation have helped stabilize incomes and create a foundation for future generations.

Today, coffee is grown in 20 of Guatemala’s 22 departments, forming the country’s eight distinct coffee regions. The coffee-growing plateau of Fraijanes surrounds the capital, Guatemala City. The Pacaya volcano, the most active of Guatemala’s three erupting volcanoes, periodically deposits light ash over the region, enriching the soil with valuable minerals. Coffees grown at Finca Los Arandános thrive in these mineral-rich soils and benefit from ideal weather conditions and high altitudes ranging between 1,400 and 1,800 masl.

Caturra, Catuai, Pache, and Marsellesa are among the varieties cultivated under the shade of trees such as pines and cypresses. This agroforestry system not only regulates temperature and creates unique microclimates, but also optimizes soil nutrition and enhances biodiversity on the farm, all while contributing to higher coffee quality.

Guatemala is a fascinating country with rich indigenous culture and stunning natural habitats. The most striking features of its landscape are the 37 volcanoes, several of them still being active. These volcanoes are not only attractive to travelers to discover but make up the distinct characters to be found in Guatemalan coffees.
