Producer COCAOL

Located in the heart of Central America, Honduras is a country renowned for its natural beauty. Endless forests meet lone roads cutting through them. Some even refer to Honduras as the "green lung" of Central America. Among its lush mountain ranges are regions dedicated to the sweet and nutty Honduran coffees we have grown so fond of.

Honduras boasts six distinct coffee-producing regions. Agalta is one of them, stretching across the northeast of the country and encompassing the departments of Olancho, Yoro, Atlántida, and Colón. It is right in Olancho where the cooperative COCAOL is located. Founded in November 1969 by a group of producers seeking better infrastructure for their farms, improved market access, and financial resources, COCAOL has grown steadily over the years.

Fifty years later, the cooperative works with farms in various towns, including Catacamas, Santa María del Real, Juticalpa, and La Unión. These farms are situated at altitudes ranging from 1,100 to 1,600 masl and have traditionally cultivated varieties such as Bourbon, Caturra, and Typica. Coffee leaf rust-resistant varieties, such as Parainema, are also gaining popularity among farmers. Additionally, COCAOL's farmer members actively engage in preserving the ecosystems within the expansive forested areas of the region. All their coffees are shade-grown, and the farms follow environmentally friendly practices. The cooperative also fosters women's participation in coffee farming, sponsors youth education, and provides training in agricultural best practices, health, and safety.

This coffee from COCAOL is certified Organic and HG EP. "HG" stands for "High Grown," specifying that the coffee was grown between 1,000 and 1,200 masl. "EP" stands for "European Preparation," meaning the beans have a screen size of 15+ with a low defect tolerance.

Located in the very middle of Central America, Honduras is a country that shows off its natural beauty. Mountainous landscapes covered with endless forests and jungles with abundant wildlife are characteristic of this beautiful country. Some people even refer to Honduras as the „green lung“ of Central America.

Although Honduras is producing more coffee than Costa Rica and Guatemala combined, little is known about it in the specialty scene. Over decades banana was the predominant cash crop in Honduras.

While neighboring countries had governmental initiatives to foster smallholder coffee growth, Honduran coffee production gained little recognition aside from the commodity market. Lack of infrastructure was the main reason why high-quality coffees could not be distinguished from other produce. However, in the past few years, the Honduran national coffee institute IHCAFE has put quite some effort into educating the farmers for them to be able to improve processing and growing techniques.

By creating a widespread network of producers and washing stations even in remote areas, the interest in high-quality coffee production grew. Nowadays, especially coffees from smallholder cooperatives have managed to make their way to cross the sea and spoil us with their divine sweetness.
